BPJEPS Surf
My name is Hugo Le Frapper, I’m 35 years old, and I’ve been surfing for over 25 years. Born in Auray, I grew up just a few miles from the rugged coast of Quiberon, where I first encountered waves and other surfers. From childhood onward, I developed a deep passion for the ocean.
When I was 9, I got my first surfboard after two years of bodyboarding. It was a revelation. I started out on my own at Sainte-Barbe Beach in Plouharnel, watching, drawing inspiration, and dreaming, with my nose buried in surf magazines (Surfer’s Journal, Surfer Mag, Surf Session, Trip Surf…). Very quickly, surfing became much more than just a hobby.
I joined a local surf school, met my first surfer friends, and discovered competitive surfing. We were lucky enough to grow up without social media, so we spent our time watching our heroes on VHS tapes and later DVDs. We’d sometimes spend entire afternoons breaking down every move—that’s when I developed a real technical understanding of the sport. This would take me to the national level, eventually leading me to join the Pôle Espoir Bretagne sports-study program, culminating in a French championship title.
At 18, I became an assistant instructor at a surf school while pursuing my engineering studies. This allowed me to fund my first trips and explore the waves of Indonesia, and eventually the rest of the world. My love of surfing inspired me to live a different kind of life: I trained as a chef so I could keep traveling, and spent two years in Western Australia, where I surfed world-class waves every day alongside some of the world’s top surfers.
Back in France, I earned my BPJEPS Surf certification in 2021. I then worked with several surf schools in La Torche as a freelance instructor.
At 35, with 26 years of surfing under my belt and a long list of legendary spots (Nias, G-Land, HT’s, North Point, El Quemao, Teahupo’o…), I’ve decided to open my own school. I want to share my passion with you and help you have a unique experience in a relaxed and welcoming atmosphere.
At Blast Surf School, you’ll do more than just learn the technical aspects of surfing—you’ll immerse yourself in the world of surfing: its history, culture, and values. These are the values that have been passed down from generation to generation, forming the close-knit family that is the surfing community.
03 / Why Blast
A school called Blast
- Having a blast
- = S'amuser
- Blast
- = Tempête
- Blast
- = Énergie
The best surfer is the one who’s smiling and having fun. That’s why I chose the name Blast for the school, inspired by the English expression “having a blast”—meaning to have a good time, to let loose, and to have fun.
"Blast" also means "storm." My first encounters with the waves took place during walks along the seashore, often during heavy winter storms. Bundled up in a windbreaker, I would spend long moments gazing out at the ocean, which fascinated me.
Beyond that, what still fascinates me most about surfing is the energy the ocean gives us—whether we’re in the water, in the middle of a session, or simply spending time by the sea, watching the waves from the beach or a spot on the cliffs with friends.
Blast is all that energy the ocean gives us—the energy that drives us to surf, to keep coming back again and again, that clears our minds, connects us to the present moment, and makes us feel good.
